The Scent of Florence – 4 Hours

Perfume Masterclass and Sensory Experience

Did you know that perfume was born in Florence? Yes, as if the Renaissance wasn’t enough, right? In 1533 Catherine de’ Medici, engaged to the king of France, travelled to Paris and took her personal perfumier, Renato Bianco, with her. Renato was specialised in making perfume and he opened the first ever perfume shop in Paris. He developed fragrances mainly as ‘potions’ to attract love. The art of perfume making derives straight from the secret and mysterious world of Alchemy.

During the tour you will relive the magic of the alchemists and apothecaries that resided in Florence during the Renaissance and you will follow the historical footprints of Catherine de Medici and René le Florentin. You will learn about the history and the uses of perfumes in the past while visiting the main perfumeries and ancient pharmacies of Florence. You will also be guided during the visit of the Ancient Pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella which is the oldest pharmacy in the world still active since 1221.

Moreover, the tour includes a masterclass which has been specially designed for this tour. During the masterclass an expert will talk to you about the ingredients of the perfumes that were used in the Renaissance and you will learn how to use the olfactory pyramid. You will participate in a real olfactory laboratory created specifically for this experience and you will create your own perfume to use and keep as a precious memory.
