Santa Croce is the one of Florence’s biggest and oldest churches and gives us a glimpse into the medieval roots of the Renaissance. The church was a Franciscan monastery, located in the poorest part of the city, often flooded by the river.
It is called the Temple of the Italian Glories because inside of this church there are hundreds of tombs belonging to important personalities of Italian history, including Michelangelo and Galileo.
In the cloisters is a small chapel, built by Brunelleschi, that some consider the finest example of early Renaissance architecture.
We will also admire works of art by Donatello, Cimabue, Giotto amongst others.
