May 1st - Festa dei Lavoratori (Labour Day) has its roots in the U.S., back in 1886, when workers went on strike demanding an 8-hour workday. The protests in Chicago — especially the Haymarket affair — turned violent, but they became a global symbol for workers’ rights. That’s why many countries, including Italy, chose May 1st as a national holiday. Meanwhile, in the U.S., Labour Day is in September. The date was moved to distance the holiday from the protests and political tensions linked to May 1st. But here’s something important: It’s not only about celebrating workers — it’s also about continuing the fight. Even today, May 1st often includes protests, demonstrations, and strikes across Italy. Workers and unions take to the streets to highlight ongoing issues like job security, wages, and working conditions. The idea is simple: rights have improved, but they’re not complete. That’s also why you may see transport disruptions or strikes around this date — they’re part of that same tradition of collective action. I noticed this detail only a few days ago 🪞✨ I see this work every day, but I had never really looked at it closely. The reflection of a hand on Cosimo I’s helmet is still there, centuries later.
